Welcome

About Me

I’m Peter Horton. I’ve spent the last two or so years working as a Data Analyst at the Redistricting Data Hub (RDH) and the two years before that working at a technology startup.

At the RDH, I’ve spent a good deal of time working on data related to incarcerated populations, performing the data analysis for the Where People in Prison Come From: The geography of mass incarceration reports from the Prison Policy Initiative. These reports have been featured on: FiveThirtyEight, Denver Post, Virginia Public Radio, New Jersey Monitor, Louisiana Illuminator and others.

In addition to that work, I’ve authored multiple reports on prison gerrymandering, including a report with a national focus, as well as reports for specific states (ex. Georgia). The latter reports were generated using a combination of GeoPandas, Python, WeasyPrint and Jinja.

This site features code I’ve found useful and additional maps or analyses I’ve made. I generally use Python, Pandas, GeoPandas and Jupyter Notebooks for processing.
